Transcription: GIF, which is an acronym for Graphic Interchange Format, was at one time the only format for images on the web. GIFs are compressed by limiting color information to 256 categories. As a result, GIFs are not the best format for photographic images with fine gradation of color. A photographic image of a sunset, for example, might display in GIF format with stripes where one color category leaves off and the next begins.
